Tuesday Couch Potatoes | It's Complicated

Happy new week, couch potatoes! This week, the prompt is about "It's Complicated," and there are just so many movies that would fit this theme - I guess every love story (or every story for that matter) has its own complications and problems... and the list of movies I thought about were: Titanic, Cruel Intentions, Indecent Proposal, Ghost... but when I thought about Romeo+Juliet, I instantly thought about this movie:

Moulin Rouge! (2001). The year is 1899, and Christian, a young English writer, has come to Paris to follow the Bohemian revolution taking hold of the city's drug and prostitute infested underworld. And nowhere is the thrill of the underworld more alive than at the Moulin Rouge, a night club where the rich and poor men alike come to be entertained by the dancers, but things take a wicked turn for Christian as he starts a deadly love affair with the star courtesan of the club, Satine. But her affections are also coveted by the club's patron: the Duke. A dangerous love triangle ensues as Satine and Christian attempt to fight all odds to stay together but a force that not even love can conquer is taking its toll on Satine. (Source - IMDb)

Directed by Baz Luhrmann, the same director of the movie "Romeo+Juliet" (Claire Danes and Leo DiCaprio), I first get to watch this through a DVD borrowed by my college friend Lhyne sometime in 2002. That time I wasn't really into musical films, but this, I enjoyed watching because it was set in 1899 yet they used pop songs like "Your Song" by Elton John and "Like a Virgin" by Madonna, among others. The story was wonderfully plotted, and I really liked how they ended "Spectacular, Spectacular." Although it was sad that Satine died in the end, it was still a happy ending because she and Christian got to be together.

The combination of story, acting, execution (direction), and music made this movie so beautiful, it's actually in my top 10 favorite movies of all time... and yes, I did purchase the VCD so I could watch it whenever I want to.
