Through Ran's Eyes

When I went with my SFC friends last Friday, there was a revelation. Ran and I were walking at the back of the pack because he has been consulting me about his problem, and when I asked him to stop walking because I want to take a picture of our friends walking, he started telling me about his photography life.

We have been friends since August last year, but it was just now that he had told me he took some photography lessons last year. I told him I was a bit disappointed at him because I have been open about my not-so-good photography, and he had been quiet all the time! Despite of him being loud and bubbly, this friend of mine is certainly quiet about things he is good at. He told me Ecko and I had been very vocal about our fondness in photography and he felt he wasn't good enough. If I only I could strangle him. LOL.

While at the novitiate, he would borrow my camera from time to time and here are his shots:

If I were him, I see no reason why he has to keep quiet about his talent! In the short time I was with him, I learned quite a lot and the biggest lesson I have learned was capturing an image on a surface level and with the camera looking up. He told me that his teacher once said that people normally take pictures looking down, or at most time they would just stand up and take the shot. (I admit I am 75% guilty of this). I learned from him that in order to be an effective photographer, one must be prepared to get dirty by lying on the ground if needed, and one must be prepared to look like a fool.

Ran had a hard time using my camera because he wasn't a digital camera kind of a person. When he took on the photography class last year, he was using an old film camera. He stopped practicing because he can no longer support it. Actually, he still hasn't had the films from last year's Panagbenga Festival processed due to lack of money. He is set to fly to work in Saudi Arabia anytime this year and I stressed to him that he has to continue because he has a talent.

To you my dear baby brother, thank you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your talent. God bless you.
